The legendary Pixinguinha, born Alfredo da Rocha Viana Filho (Rio de Janeiro, 1897–1973), was a composer, instrumentalist (flutist and saxophonist), conductor, and arranger. He is undoubtedly one of the foundational pillars of modern Brazilian popular music.
From a very young age, he distinguished himself as a virtuoso flutist and saxophonist, crafting a unique style that blended the choro tradition with influences from jazz and the urban sounds of Rio de Janeiro. Throughout his career, he composed hundreds of choros. His role as an arranger and ensemble director was pivotal in defining the modern sound of the genre. His music is characterized by harmonic sophistication, melodic lyricism, and rhythmic richness, elements that made him a bridge between popular music and Brazilian art music.

Pixinguinha also actively participated in historical recordings starting in the 1910s, and his influence remains strong among musicians worldwide who perform his works, especially "Carinhoso", his most famous choro, which has become a universal icon of Brazilian music.
Ingenuo by Pixinguinha: The Soul of the Choro-canção
"Ingenuo" is a piece that represents Pixinguinha’s maturity. It is a deeply inspired choro-canção, melancholy and tranquil in character, written in 2/4 time. It features a melodic line so "cantabile" that years later, it allowed the poet Paulo César Pinheiro to add masterful lyrics, which can be found below.
Jacob do Bandolim (1918-1969), another icon of the choro genre, praised it as follows: "Ingênuo represents the very essence of a choro: the beauty of the melody, the beauty of the harmony, the rhythm, and the masterfully achieved connection between its modulations." "Ingenuo" is an example of how popular music can reach levels of classical sophistication without losing its roots.
For musicians and scholars of Pixinguinha’s work, the opening of "Ingenuo" contains a harmonic surprise. The melody begins with a four-bar phrase (in the key of F major) that is immediately repeated, without preparation, transposed one tone down to E-flat major. That is to say, the harmony moves from a I to a bVII. This direct descending modulation, without any bridge chord, is highly original and breaks all predictability.

As a clarinetist, I have had the pleasure of performing "Ingenuo" a few times and in different contexts.
Trio version with the group "Vai Passar": In the video at the beginning of this article, from 2018, I present a version alongside Fernando Gedacht (guitar) and Andrés Jubert (percussion). In this intimate setting, the clarinet seeks to imitate the human voice, taking advantage of the space for expressive phrasing and the use of the instrument's full range. It includes an improvisation in the middle of the piece. This video was recorded in a single take, without cuts or edits.
Version with the ensemble "Choro da Gloria" (Brazil): On the other hand, I also have a sound recording made in Buenos Aires with "Choro da Gloria" from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, when this excellent group visited Argentina in 2019. In this traditional Regional formation (clarinet, tenor sax, guitar, cavaquinho, and pandeiro), the piece takes on a different texture. You can press play below to listen to it. It was recorded during a performance on May 10, 2019, at Clásico Fernández.

Did you know?Creative Recycling: The second part of Ingenuo is actually the third part of an earlier choro by Pixinguinha titled "Porque sofres", published in 1919. Irresistible Melody: It is one of the few instrumental pieces that compelled three legends to write lyrics for it. In addition to the famous version by Paulo César Pinheiro, there are lyrics written by Jacob do Bandolim and the great guitarist Baden Powell. A Piece of History: There is a famous informal recording from April 15, 1963, where Jacob do Bandolim are heard playing the piece together during the early hours of a sarau (musical gathering). Jacob anuncies the time: "1:40 AM" capturing an atmosphere of absolute intimacy. You can listen to it on this YouTube link. |
