Program Notes and Context of the Album

Recording date: September 1, 2023 (Buenos Aires premiere). Conductor: Carlos Calderón.

World-premiered ten years earlier in the city of Rosario, this excellent work by Ezequiel Diz immerses itself in the roots of tango, adopting its characteristic melodies, rhythms, articulations, and accents to integrate them into a rigorous, contrapuntal academic treatment. Structured in a classical A-B-A form, the opening section bursts with a fast and syncopated energy, giving way to a melancholy central section with broad melodic lines that features a demanding cadenza for the soloist. The writing assigned to the clarinet takes on an authentic concertante character and high virtuosity, challenging the performer to deploy the instrument's full range, chromatics, irregular note values, and complex octave leaps.
